Vail, Arizona is in Pima County, in the Tucson metro area. Vail is located 22 miles southeast of Tucson and has an elevation is 3,235 feet.
The population, at the time of the 2000 census, was 2,484.
Vail is named after the Vail Brothers, Edward and Walter. They arrived in the late 1870's and became cattle ranchers. Although Vail was christened as a town in 1893, it was never incorporated. As such, the “town” of Vail has no official boundaries or legal status. It is only an area. In the early 1900s, Vail was a busy cattle-shipping center and mining town.
The Vail School District was established in 1903 and now is one of the fastest growing school districts in Arizona. The Vail School District is known for its excelling, award winning schools including Cinega High School.
Today the Vail, Az community is still growing. Vail is a combination of small town life with metropolitan amenities. New neighborhoods are popping up throughout Southeast Tucson, Vail, Sahuarita, Corona de Tucson, and various other unincorporated areas. Additionally, commercial developers are eyeing the area with increasing interest. One projec is he Passages of Tucson, a planned mixed-use destination development on 400 acres that is expected to be complete by 2020. Vail is also the home of Colossal Cave.
