Vail allowed the Southern Pacific Railroad to cut across his property. The Southern Pacific Railroad used the settlement as a water stop on its route. Edward’s brother Walter was also a rancher. Walter Vail owned a ranch that is located close to the location of his brother’s ranch. The ranch owned by Walter has been included as part of the Las Ciennegas National Conservation area.
