Tucson Sports and Recreation
Given its spectacular desert climate, Tucson, Arizona has a surprising variety of sports available and not all of them are the types of things you might associate with sunny, warm environments. In fact, there is a swim team at the University of Arizona that has won NCAA championships for both its men’s and women’s teams. Believe it or not, there’s even a hockey team in town, the Arizona Icecats, so people moving from colder environments who love watching a good hockey game won’t feel left out.
College Teams
Tucson is probably best known for its college teams. The University of Arizona Wildcats are located in the city and there are several different sports in which they participate. Softball, basketball and other sports are all represented at the University. Tucson has a lot of well-known sports, but they also have some sports that are fairly new and that offer some interesting ways to spend your time year-round.
The Tucson Thunder Kats, for instance, are an indoor football team. They’ve only just begun playing, having formed a team in 2011, but having a new team in town is always exciting and indoor football is becoming a popular sport. You can catch their games at the Tucson Convention Center.
Getting Out and Getting Active
If you’re interested in sports that you can participate in rather than watch, there are plenty to partake of in the Tucson area. Because of the climate, biking and hiking are both very popular activities. The parks around the city of Tucson are popular places where people enjoy sports, as well, and you can usually find a community soccer team, baseball team or just about anything else you want to participate in available for you or, if you are parents, for your children. It’s nice enough to play outside year-round in Tucson, and residents tend to take advantage of that fact.
