Sam Hughes, Tucson’s beautiful, historic neighborhood

Located just east of the University of Arizona you will find another of Tucson’s treasured, historic neighborhoods, Sam Hughes. Building began in the early 1900’s and continued until the early 1950’s. A good many of the buildings were constructed in the Mission and Pueblo Revival styles, inspired by California churches and Indian dwellings respectively, but a mix of Bungalows, Ranch and Tudor Revival style homes were interspersed along the way.

The History

The neighborhood takes its name from one of TUSD’s oldest Elementary schools which was named for the Welsh immigrant, Sam Hughes, who helped to incorporate the city of Tucson and sat on its first city council.

Mr. Hughes was instrumental in assisting the territorial governor A.P.K. Safford, known as the “Father of Public Schools” in establishing public education in the Territory of Arizona.

Many of the original homes were built to house teachers for the elementary school and the tourists who flocked to Tucson for its weather.

The neighborhood

Today, the area is primarily a quiet residential neighborhood that still houses the elementary school teachers as well as young families, university faculty, students and retirees. It is a vibrant, active community comprised of people at all stages in life.

The location

The Sam Hughes neighborhood enjoys close proximity to the University of Arizona campus, Downtown Tucson, the retail stores and cafes along 6th Avenue, and the “Best Playground” in Tucson, Himmel Park.

Himmel (Heaven in German) Park boasts three separate playgrounds with something for everyone – from beginner slides up to the “Giganto” slide of death, as well as a public swimming pool, grassy picnic areas and a nearby Public Library.
