Tucson, Arizona, is the state's second-largest city and the heart of Pima County. It is on the Santa Cruz River, 100 miles (160 km) southeast of Phoenix. Tucson is located in a desert valley surrounded by six mountain ranges. At an Elevation of 2,400 feet, Tucson is cradled by the Santa Catalina Mountains on the north, the Rincon Mountains to the east, the Tucson Mountains to the west, the Tortolita Mountains on the northwest and the Santa Rita and Sierrita Mountains to the south.
Similar to many other Western U.S. cities, Tucson was developed on a grid plan, with the city center at Stone Avenue and Broadway Boulevard. While this intersection was initially near the geographic center of Tucson, that center has shifted as the city has expanded far to the east. The city limits of Tucson cover an area of 180 square miles, while the entire metropolitan area spreads over 495 square miles. Tucson is an expansive city covering a substantial area and has many distinct areas and neighborhoods.
